Frequently Asked Questions

Empowering Smiles with Specialized Care: La Jolla's Trusted Endodontics

General Information

1. What is Micro Endodontics?

Micro-endodontics is a specialized field of endodontics that utilizes an operating microscope or high-magnification loupes during treatment. The main advantage of using high magnification in endodontics is that it allows the endodontist to see tiny details inside the tooth that would not be visible to the naked eye, enabling more precise and efficient treatment.

The procedure often involves the following steps:

Diagnosis: The first step is a thorough examination and diagnosis of the affected tooth. The dentist uses a microscope to view the tooth in high detail.

Access Preparation: The endodontist makes an opening in the tooth to reach the root canal system. The microscope allows for a minimally invasive approach, preserving more of the tooth structure.

Cleaning and Shaping: The endodontist then cleans the canals and shapes them for filling. Using a microscope helps identify additional canals that might be missed under normal view, ensuring thorough cleaning.

Filling: The canals are filled with a biocompatible material, often gutta-percha. A microscope ensures a tight and complete fill, preventing future infections.

Restoration: Finally, a filling or crown is placed to restore the tooth to full function. Micro-endodontics allows for precision in this restoration process, leading to better results.

Micro-endodontics allows for better visualization of the root canal system, accurate location and negotiation of all root canals, improved debridement and disinfection of the root canal system, detection and management of root fractures, and precision in obturation and final restoration. All these factors contribute to a higher success rate of root canal treatments.

2. How is an endodontist different from a general dentist?

An endodontist is a specialized dentist who has undergone extra training beyond dental school to focus on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the tooth's pulp. If you're experiencing symptoms such as persistent toothache or temperature sensitivity, you might need an endodontist.

3. What are some signs that I might need to see an endodontist?

Signs you might need to see an endodontist include tooth pain, temperature sensitivity, biting pain, gum bumps, or swelling. If you're experiencing these symptoms or believe you might need a root canal, Katherine Thomson DDS and Jenny Huang DDS are here to guide you toward the correct treatment.

4. What types of dental issues can an endodontist treat?

Endodontists handle a wide range of dental ailments, including deep cavities, cracked teeth, abscesses, and inflammation due to trauma or infection. With specialized training, Endodontic specialists can address all these issues and more.

Procedures and Treatments

5. What procedures can an endodontist perform?

Endodontists perform root canal treatments, root canal re-treatments, resorption repairs, endodontic surgeries, and any treatment related to the tooth's nerve. If you think you need endodontic treatment, La Jolla Microendodontics will diagnose and treat your condition quickly resolving your pain and discomfort.

6. Do endodontic procedures hurt?

No, they don't have to! With our advanced  treatments techniques and anesthesia , you'll feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure.

7. What happens during a root canal procedure?

Katherine Thomson DDS numbs the area with a local anesthetic, places a rubber dam on the tooth to create a clean, bacteria-free environment, then accesses the nerve canal system to remove damaged pulp, disinfect the canals, and finally seal them.

8. Will a root canal hurt?

Contrary to popular belief, root canals can be pain-free experiences, thanks to new technology and innovations in anesthesia.

9. Can I drive after a root canal? Can I eat after my root canal?

Yes, you can drive unless you've taken an oral sedative. After the procedure, you can eat, but be careful not to bite your cheeks or tongue.

10. Will a root canal ruin my existing crown?

Most root canals can be done through existing crowns without causing damage. However, if the crown has a defect, a new one might be recommended to ensure your root canal is sealed properly.
