Endodontic Surgery: What to Expect

Before

Before getting started we’ll review the treatment plan in detail and ensure you feel comfortable — we offer blankets, pillows, music and whatever else you need to feel relaxed. Sedation may also be available in certain cases.  The length of your treatment is dependent on location and complexity of tooth. We’ll make sure you know exactly what to expect.

During

During an apicoectomy, small incision is made to open the gum tissue near the troublesome tooth. With the underlying bone exposed, we’ll use a surgical microscope and advanced equipment to complete the procedure with the greatest precision and thoroughness possible.

After

Once surgery is complete, the bone will naturally heal around the end of the root, we often augment this with bone grafting — your tooth will return back to its normal function in no time! Generally, there is very little down time after this procedure and patients return to their regular day-to-day activities the following day. We’ll send you home with detailed after-care instructions and answers to all your questions.

What Is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy, is a minor surgical process involving the resection and removal of a tooth's root tip. The root canal system is then sealed with a filling. This procedure is primarily aimed at resolving any lingering inflammation or infection at the roots end after a completed root canal.

An apicoectomy aids in:

  • Identifying minor fractures on the root's external part
  • Dealing with canals that couldn't be approached from the tooth's top
  • Excising the root end harbouring persistent bacteria
  • Addressing damage to the root surfaces or the tooth's adjacent bone
  • Enabling the biopsy of disease or infection

Like all endodontic procedures we conduct at La Jolla Micro Endodontics, an apicoectomy primary objectives are the preservation of your tooth and your comfort.
